THE PYRAMID OF MAIDUM
— FRIDAY 11 JANUARY 2008 — MAIDUM, EGYPT — 4TH DYN. OLD KINGDOM —

This is the last pyramid we were to visit on our magikal journey.

The pyramid at Maidum was the first one built by the powerhouse, first pharaoh of the Fourth Dynasty, Sneferu, who turned it from a step pyramid to a true pyramid by filling in the steps with limestone encasing.

The Maidum pyramid was built in different stages, beginning as a seven-step pyramid to which an additional step was added at a later stage. Some believe it was the collapse of this pyramid during the reign of Sneferu that led him to change the angle on his second pyramid at Dashur to 43 degrees.

Many of our fellow travelers explored the burial chamber and touched the old wood beam.

Here is Ehab delivering one his exquisite lectures regarding the textured history of this place.

In its ruined state, the structure is 213 feet high, and its entrance is aligned north-south, with the entrance in the north, 65 feet above present ground level.

The steep descending passage 187 feet long leads to a horizontal passage, just below the original ground level, that then leads to a vertical shaft 33 feet high that leads to the corbelled burial chamber itself.
